| The destruction by the sea of the St. George is now happening with such a speed that we are racing against time in order to salvage the last and maybe most execptional of all finds in the hold. According to what we know today about how British warships from the time of the Napoleon wars were constructed, the hold was divided into a number of rooms which according to regulations had storages of provisions, drinkable water and deposits of ammunition, etc. mainly stored in barrels. Furthermore, we have reason to believe that all available space has been used for storage of goods, such as equipment, furniture and sea chests belonging to the crew. | ![]() A british naval Lieutenant. |
St. George was one of a series of four 3-decker ships of the line of which the contructional drawings have be preserved. It must be examined whether the construction of the ship and the timber is according to the drawings. There may be individual differences and modifications from ship to ship, even though the type of the ship is documented by contemporary materials, as as we know, the St. George is the first wreck of large 3-decker 2nd. rate ship-of-the-line subject to naval archaeological investigations. Therefore, there are many still unknown details about the construction and the interior fittings of the ship.
You can help us by contributing with a donation to the diving expeditions and salvation of the artefacts still buried with the wreck. The more funding, the sooner we can explore the wreck again in order to recover and retrieve new finds.
