1996

In 1996 there were 5 days to explore the wreck of the St. George. It had been documented that the state of destruction were worse than expected at first. An attempt to explore the hold amidships failed. But the divers succeeded in reaching the aft hold where highest in the undisturbed layers they found the well preserved skeleton of a drowned sailor. Earlier investigations of the orlop deck had not revealed human bones which had lead to the conclusion that the entire crew had been washed overboard by the breakers.

From the sea bottom outside the ships port the divers retrieved two 12-pound guns of the Blomefield pattern and a cannon carriage still with paint on. In the sea bottom layers bedded inside the ship several artefacts were discovered which had belonged to the orlope deck. The most sensational item was a tin plate with a memorial inscription for admiral Nelson, but also a so called carriage block for a carronade was an impressive item.

The exploration of the wreck was interrupted for various periods of time due to the bad weather conditions which were the reason why the hold amidships not were explored.
