Strandingsmuseum Sct. George is the museum having the responsibility for marine archaeology in Ringkøbing and Viborg counties It is the duty of the museum to carry out ordinary marin archaeology, inspections, take reports and do requested archaeological jobs for construction works and other activities on the sea bed within its region of responsibility.
This region of responsibility covers the North Sea coastal areas of Ringkøbing and Viborg counties, the western part of Limfjorden, Nissum, Stadil and Ringkøbing fjords and also the inland streams and lakes in the same region.
Strandingsmuseum St. George - Center of Marin Archaeology in Thorsminde, Bangsbo Museum in Frederikshavn, Langeland's Museum in Rudkøbing and The Viking Ships Museum in Roskilde (from where the National Museum's responsibilities for marine archaeology is managed) are at the moment the four places with marine archaeological stand-by.
It is expected that there will be more such centres in the future.
A central idea of the project Center of Marine Archaeology is the exchange
of data and of knowledge between researchers. Already now we can offer
access to data and positions of more than thousands of wrecks in the North
Sea - see the Index of wrecks.
